Therapeutic approaches

Our work is informed by contemporary psychological research and draws upon a range of evidence-based approaches including:

• Mentalization-Based Therapy (MBT): MBT helps people develop a deeper understanding of their own thoughts, emotions and behaviours, as well as those of other people. It is particularly helpful for emotional regulation, relationship difficulties and attachment-related challenges.

• Attachment-Based Therapy: Attachment-informed therapy explores how early relationships continue to influence emotional wellbeing, self-esteem and relationships in adulthood.

• Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR): EMDR is a powerful and evidence-based treatment for trauma and distressing experiences. It helps the brain process experiences that have become "stuck", reducing their emotional intensity and impact on daily life.

• Internal Family Systems (IFS): IFS helps people develop a compassionate understanding of different parts of themselves. Rather than viewing emotions or reactions as problems, IFS helps people understand how different parts developed and what they may need.

• Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT): CFT is particularly helpful for shame, self-criticism and low self-worth. It supports the development of self-compassion, emotional safety and resilience.

• Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): ACT helps people build a meaningful life guided by their values while developing greater flexibility in responding to difficult thoughts and emotions.

• Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): CBT helps individuals understand connections between thoughts, feelings and behaviours, developing practical strategies for creating change.

• Narrative approaches: We explore the stories people tell about themselves, their relationships, and their experiences. Together, we work to identify strengths, develop alternative perspectives, and create more meaningful and empowering narratives.

• Mind-body and trauma-informed approaches, including trauma stabilisation, Flash Technique, EMDR-informed interventions, and sensorimotor psychotherapy: We recognise the impact that trauma, stress, and life experiences can have on both the mind and body. These approaches help clients develop greater emotional regulation, increase a sense of safety, and process difficult experiences at a pace that feels manageable.

• Existential and grief therapies: These approaches support people in navigating loss, life transitions, uncertainty, and questions of meaning, identity, and purpose. They provide a space to reflect on what matters most and how to move forward in the face of life’s challenges.

• Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): DBT helps people develop practical skills for managing intense emotions, improving relationships, tolerating distress, and building a life that feels more balanced and fulfilling.

• Psychodynamic psychotherapy: Psychodynamic therapy explores how past experiences and unconscious patterns may influence current thoughts, emotions, relationships, and ways of coping. By developing greater insight and understanding, lasting change becomes possible.

Rather than fitting people into a particular model, we tailor therapy to the individual sitting in front of us.

What to expect

We aim to make accessing psychological support as straightforward and transparent as possible. Before beginning therapy, we will discuss your needs, answer any questions you may have, and explain all costs clearly so that you can make an informed decision about whether we are the right fit for you.

Free initial telephone consultation
We understand that seeking therapy can feel like a significant step. For this reason, we offer a brief initial consultation to help you understand how we work and to determine whether our service is likely to meet your needs. Following this, we will arrange an assessment appointment with the psychologist best suited to support you.

Initial assessment
The assessment is an opportunity for us to develop a detailed understanding of your current difficulties, your personal history, your strengths, and your goals for therapy. We are interested not only in symptoms, but in understanding you as a whole person. Together we will develop a shared understanding of what may be contributing to your difficulties and discuss the most appropriate therapeutic approach moving forward.

Psychological therapy
Most therapy sessions last 50 minutes and take place on a weekly basis. Research consistently shows that regular therapy sessions provide the stability and continuity needed to develop a strong therapeutic relationship and support meaningful change. However, we recognise that every person is different and we will always discuss frequency and duration collaboratively.
